Lighting

In order to save 10 to 40 percent of your energy consumption, halogen bulbs are the way to go, and they have double and sometimes triple the lifespan of incandescent light bulbs. Halogen bulbs work at peak efficiency if they are allowed to operate for at least 15 minutes per use. Turning a light on and off frequently will lower the efficiency and may affect the bulb's lifespan. Try kitchens, hallways, and outside fixtures for your initial transition.

LEDs are the top of the top with regards to efficient light bulbs. These can last for tens of thousands of hours, and they have a cooler light. Although they're not yet designed well for producing 360 degrees of light, you can purchase ones with diffusers, which are great for workspaces

Be prepared to pay more. However, the expectation is that you will recoup the cost over time, due to energy bill decreases and the bulb's longer life.

Lighten Up

When driving, try take out from your car whatever you don't need, such as car seats, unused bike or roof racks. Weight is the single most significant contributor to fuel usage; for every hundred pounds in cargo, you lose between one and two percent of fuel economy. Unnecessary weight will also contribute to drag, which reduces your car's efficiency as well.

When flying, don't pack anything heavy that you don't really require. Air travel is among the very worst culprits in terms of carbon emissions, and a lighter load means better fuel efficiency.
